Sound Off: America's gun policy

In the wake of mass school shootings — including the massacre in Newtown, Conn., last month, what should America’s response to gun laws be? Independent Herald readers sound off:

Just look at Illinois, specifically Chicago. Illinois has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, and they also have the highest homicide rate in the nation. So it doesn’t appear that stricter gun laws are the answer. I think arming private citizens so we can defend ourselves is the best answer. Just imagine how many of the murders that occur every day could be prevented if someone else had a firearm to stop the shooter.
Rudy W.

I don’t think any ban will stop or reduce such horrific events. Mentally ill people and criminals don’t follow laws, plain and simple. We ban, we create a black market. Black markets are run by criminals.
Steve S.

Let’s make guns illegal so criminals can’t get them. It’s worked with meth, right?

Idiot control is what we need.

It’s not the gun that kills. It’s the deranged minds behind them.

If it’s against the law for law-abiding citizens to own guns then we will be defenseless against the criminals that will find a way to own them anyway, not to mention the other countries that are sitting around waiting for America to be disarmed. We will become sitting ducks.
Jennifer D.

Never give in to having your guns taken from you. It’s not the guns, it’s the sick, perverted, delusional minds holding them. Same as with a knife, hammer, iron rod or rocks. It’s the blackness in the heart. The brain operates the hand the same as it operates the mouth.

The assault weapons should be banned. They are not needed for anything but combat.

A new gun ban law isn’t gonna help anything. It isn’t like the criminals pay attention to the laws or anything like that.
Jennifer S.

The Second Amendment was put into the constitution by our founding fathers for a reason that is still relevant today. One of the ways for the government to control its people is to disarm them. The real issue that no one seems to be concerned with in government is the true issue of mental illness.

How about a ban on all law-breaking politicians? Violate the constitution, lock them up.

Telling me that I don’t need any weapon with a 30 round magazine is like me telling you that you don’t need any vehicle that drives faster than 35 mph.

We need to ban idiot politicians.
Harold R.

All this talk of gun control is a waste of time. The government, especially our local government, can’t even keep a handle on all these drug dealers, meth makers, etc. How do they expect to enforce new gun laws? They can’t. All these meetings are just keeping politicians busy so they don’t have to give attention to things more important.
Martha W.

No way would I lay down and roll over for my gun rights to be taken away. The Second Amendment was put into place for the “people” against tyranny and for protection, plain and simple.
Bobbie H.
